When To Buy New Appliances For Home?

The question "when to buy new appliances" is often the most thought about in a particular household. A lot of factors can determine the answer to this question. In this article, some of the deciding factors are discussed in detail.

1. Age of Appliance
This is a very important factor. The age of the appliance matters a lot. Even if a particular appliance is working perfectly fine, with passage of time and advancement in technology, new features are often introduced which further enhance the efficiency of that particular appliance. For instance, let us take the example of air-conditioners. In the 80s and 90s, the air-conditioners were mainly the window type which had all the system built in a cube like shape and it fitted in the specially built windows in the walls. But in the early 2000s, split air-conditioner units started to become popular due to their improved efficiency and reducing the size of the hole that had to be made in the wall. The split a/c required just a few inches of circular hole in the wall to connect to the outer unit through pipes. On top of that it produced more cooling per KW of energy consumption i.e, better efficiency. So, age of the appliance matters a lot as a newer appliance may include the much needed features that were absent in the previous versions.

2. Type of Appliance
Once you have identified the age of your appliance, the second thing you want to consider is the type of appliance you are thinking of replacing. Is it a vacuum cleaner, a grinder, an iron, an air-conditioner or a TV. Most of the appliances do not have to be replaced if they are working perfectly fine despite being decades old. Such appliances include grinders, blenders, vacuum cleaners and electric irons. I have seen people use a decades old electric irons. Though they don't have some features of modern irons but still if it is serving the purpose well then there is no need to replace it. On the other hand, TV have evolved a lot in the past few decades. In the 70s and 80s they had big belly curved screens, then came flat screens in 90s and early 2000s. Then the LCD and finally the LED technologies came with integration of internet and the much watched online streaming services such as Youtube and Netflix. If you still own a cathode ray TV and thinking about replacing it with a latest 4K LED then go ahead as it is really worth the money spent.

3. Frequency of Repairs
If a particular appliance is getting expensive repairs too often then it is definitely time to say goodbye to  it. There is no need to keep on holding onto it if you can get a newer appliance by just saving the cost of couple of repairs on the old one. Some items do require preventive maintenance after every year or two but their cost is almost limited to few dollars.

4. Saving in Bill
Another factor to consider is the amount of money that you can save in the electricity bills due to a particular new appliance. Usually, this factor is applicable to the power guzzling appliances such as air-conditioners, washing machine, vacuum cleaners and electric heaters. Grinders, blenders, juicer machines are usually used for few minutes a day and are usually gentle on power.  If you can save considerable amount of money in terms of electricity bills by purchasing a new appliance then go ahead and get a new one. Be sure to check the energy star rating when purchasing an appliance.

Hopefully, these four aspects can help you decide whether you want to replace an old appliance or not. We will return with another interesting article for you soon. If you find the article helpful then share it with your friends and family.
